Wakefield Memorial High School
Visual Art One
In Visual Art One, students learn the basics of a wide variety of materials and techniques, how to develop good studio habits, and about art in our modern world.
We begin by focusing on the Elements of Art and Design as we build a foundation of knowledge on which the students can develop a passion for visual art. Students are encouraged to expand upon project prompts with their own unique twists, creating individualized artwork they are proud of.
On top of creating artwork, students do a research project on a living artist. Their chosen artist must be alive and making a living from their artwork, so students can see the reach of visual art and how it is a field they could see themselves a part of in their future.
Visual Art Two
In Visual Art Two, students build upon their learning from Art One. Continuing to foster a deep understanding of the Elements and Principles of Art and Design, students learn more complex techniques and develop greater skill in Art Two.
Students learn more about the tools and terms that make up the visual art world and start considering their work as a portfolio of art to take them into further art courses.
Students who take Art Two learn more about their continued art options at WMHS. After taking Art Two, students can continue into Graphic Design, Ceramics, Advanced Drawing and Painting, Illustration, or Photography and can progress to AP level Visual Art. Students in Art Two get more acquainted with options for careers in the arts as they begin to think of college and job options for their future.
Virtual Art Show, 2021
The 2020-2021 School year was certainly a new experience for students and teachers, but I was able to take what I had learned at the end of the 2019-2020 school year and give our Art One students another Virtual Art Show!
Students created amazing works of art at home, in school, and virtually this year, showing true tenacity and a passion for their work. I am proud to present the Wakefield Memorial High School Art One virtual art show: https://www.artsteps.com/view/60b6910cac3119b4ece37aa2
Virtual Art Show, 2020
Every year WMHS participates in a district wide Visual and Performing Arts Show hosted at the end of April. In 2020, due to the world wide quarantine and school closings, the teachers of WMHS banded together to create a virtual art show experience.
Created using Artsteps.com, each teacher created a virtual gallery students, parents, and anyone could “walk” through and view the work produced by our talented students.
